There are some holy grails in lm that should not be remade. As we said in this magazine many years ago, Charade, with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant, was one. Not that that stopped Hollywood.
Its Arthur’s turn to get the remake treatment, and early reviews Stateside have not been promising. Nevertheless, it had its London première last night, and perhaps we should reserve judgement till weve seen it ourselves.
Dudley Moore is no longer with us, so Russell Brand has stepped into his shoes for the new generation of moviegoers. Sir John Gielguds character has had a sex change and now takes the form of Dame Helen Mirren.
Its not Dame Helens only remake of late: she took over from Bill Nighy in the American version of State of Play.
Both Brand and Dame Helen wore Dolce Gabbana to the première at the O2 Arena.
Katy Perry was on the red carpet with her husband, though she didnt last quite as long as it was Brands day to shine. Taylor Hackford, Dame Helens husband, was also present, as were Arthur co-stars Greta Gerwig and Geraldine James.
Noel Gallagher and Mark Ronson were there to support Brand.
