Each week through June 4, the top-notch mens e-tailer Mr Porter will unveil an exclusive capsule collection, drawing both from cult labels and established designers like Raf Simons. The first one, on sale May 14, comes from the Tokyo brand Beams Plus, and fuses two classic American looks that the Japanese have long fetishized — surf and Ivy League style — with comic results: khaki board shorts, anyone? Forthcoming collections include Alexander Wangs sophisticated update of jock staples (like collared baseball tees) and elegant sportswear from Ami inspired by the bobos who hang around the Canal Saint-Martin in Paris.
I was discovered: At the Essence office! I was visiting Mikki Taylor one day, and she was a judge on the Oxygen television show Monique’s Fat Chance, which I won. She was a mentor to me. While visiting her I was stopped by Nana Eyeson from the Beauty department who asked me if I was represented. I told her ‘no’ and she called my now agents at Wilhelmina and asked them to see me. That was a Monday. On Thursday at my meeting I was offered a contract and that was over seven years ago. That was one of the most amazing moments of my life! My best feature is: My personality! The curators, Kate Irvin and Laurie Brewer, from the schools department of costume and textiles, have capitalized on this recent surge of interest in the artistry and craftsmanship of mens wear with their study of clothing and ephemera honoring the aesthetic provocateur.

The architect Rafael de Cárdenas has electrified Rivieras, the classic French slip-on, with a sharp new pattern available in four color combos. De Cárdenas says the shoe brand was a natural fit for him. I like their form and shape as well as their nod to the 60s and 70s French Riviera summer culture, he says. I also like that they are called a leisure shoe, almost as though wearing them might relax you regardless of whether youre leisurely or not. $100; Opening Ceremony, (212) 219-2688.
